...A series of discussions
The ongoing global economic and financial downturn, the most serious in 70 years, exposes the crisis-ridden nature of capitalism as well as the urgency of developing a viable alternative to it. Marx’s ideas are becoming an increasingly important focal point in discussions on the ongoing economic, social, and ecological crises. This series will explore how his work speaks to today’s realities, especially as found in his most important theoretical work, 'Capital'.

New Social Movements in South Africa
The global economic-financial crisis is having a profound impact on the African continent, especially upon Southern Africa. Economic conditions are deteriorating for tens of millions, and income inequality is widening. China has emerged as S Africa’s largest trading partner, raising concerns about the threat of a “new imperialism” that is looting Africa’s resources. At the same time, new efforts are emerging from grassroots movements and social struggles that are trying to resist these conditions and develop new perspectives for social emancipation, as especially seen from the work of the shackdwellers movement in South Africa.

Marx at the Margins: Ethnicity, Nationalism and non-Western Societies

Marx's writings have been criticized as Eurocentric and blind to issues of race and nationalism. Anderson's examination of Marx's writings, especially those from his often-neglected last decade of life, will show otherwise. They indicate a greater appreciation of the contributions of non-Western societies to world culture, and a more multilinear concept of human development. These texts also show a lively interest in gender relations.

Kevin Anderson teaches sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is a participant in the Marx-Engels Gesamtausgabe (MEGA) publication project, the author of Lenin, Hegel and Western Marxism (1995), the co-author of Foucault and the Iranian Revolution (2005), and a co-editor of the Rosa Luxemburg Reader (2004).
